Increase the Ambiance With Porch Columns

The columns on the front of your porch often say a lot about the look and feel of your home and it very important to design and build them carefully. If you are not interested in having someone else build these columns for you, you can actually do it yourself. The nicest columns that you can add to the porch on the front of your house are stone porch columns.

Before starting to build these columns you must first plan and prepare. It is important to look at the current state of your porch and decide if it is in fact strong enough to handle the building of new columns. This is important as stone columns do in fact add a great deal of weight to the porch and if the porch is older then it may not support the new stone.

The next step involves measuring between your existing columns. If you do not already have these on the porch then you should make a sketch of the porch and the placement of the columns. It is important to record the distance between the columns for future reference. There are many different styles and designs to choose from in the line of columns, but if you want ones made of stone it is likely you will have to add the stone yourself using mortar.

It is important that you leave room between your columns as you do not want to make them so big with the stone that you will block off the view of the front of the house. It will also be important that you be able to move large items in and out of the house through the columns.

Now you are ready to select the stone. If you want different stones of different colors, it is important that you select stones of similar sizes. It will not look good if all of your stones are different, you want to have some sort of pattern on your columns. Once you have selected the stones and have measured correctly you may beginning putting your stones in place. Once again it is important to be careful with the selection of stone as you may find that these stones can take up a lot of additional space on the front of the porch.
